Atlantean EN Watkins 9780578098869 Books

First, I need to state I won a copy of this book. I found it very interesting, though there was a lot of mythology and back story, I think it will be needed, as I see there will be more books coming with these characters. I found I finished the book quickly and was fascinating for me. The main character was young and confused through the majority of the book, but he was just learning who he is. All the supporting cast are also quite interesting, though we don't learn too much about them. Again, I get the feeling we will be finding out more in future books. Though, there is no mention in this book of others to come, the conflict is left open and totally unresolved. I will be looking for it to be coming out in the future, and reread this one before I start it, so I can keep all the back story fresh. And I think this book will appeal to ages 13-up, it is also clean and humorous. Thanks!

Atlantean EN Watkins 9780578098869 Books Reviews

I received this book from one of the giveaways on goodreads.com. I did like the plot of the book and the uniqueness of the story. The way that the author took the stories that we all know and put their own spin on thwm and the way they could of happened is very attention grabbing. The only thing that I didn't care for (besides the grammatical editing issues) was the way the story was told, it felt more like reading a script instead of a story. The whole book was basically just conversations which makes it feel like you don't acquire much of an actual story, and the order that the stories are told makes it confusing and hard to keep up with. But overall, I thought it was a pretty good book and had a unique plot, which is definately a great quality in a book.

REVIEW
I was really excited when I won Atlantean by E.N Watkins on Goodreads and even more so because it was based around the myth of Atlantis. Watkins gets very detailed and pulls of an interesting twist about Atlantis that I found very original.

Amadeus Angel has gone through life suffering by the hands of his "parents." You see he special, though he doesn't know it yet until the day he is requested to attend Eden Prep. He discovers that he is an Atlantean and someone very important. He meets other like him who help put together the pieces that he's been hidden from his whole life.

Amadeus was a great character, growing up he was practically tortured by his "parents." When he cries in pain, his tears form crystals in which they take from him. I found this rather interesting and was so glad that those people get what they deserved after what they did to him. The whole story focuses around him discovering his origins and how Atlantis is connected to events in the Bible.

There are many characters introduced, but the four connected to Amadeus are Nyssa, Diana, Eli and Victoria. These girls become bonded with him, using their abilities to communicate and learn from each other. I found this rather unique and not sure how I felt with all the bonding because everyone else had one soul mate and he seems to be connected with many. Nyssa is different from the rest and she has another unique ability and Eli has one heck of a story behind who she is.

My main issue was the information; I felt so overwhelmed at points and even got lost at others. Don't get me wrong the history behind this that was created for this story is very detailed and really interesting. But I felt I was being taught in class about the mythology instead of following the characters on their adventures.

Overall I really enjoyed learning about Amadeus, where he comes from and how each character is connected. My favorite part was learning about the different abilities the Atlantean's could do, communications, talking under water, Atlantis itself, etc. It brought the story to life. I would definitely read the next book, I'm so curious on where the characters will go and how they will teach the students in the end.

RECOMMENDATION
This is a young adult novel that has a creative twist to the tale of Atlantis. Fans who love myth novels such as Mythos Academy and Covenant Series will enjoy Atlantean by E.N. Watkins.
I won this book from First Reads giveaways from Goodreads in exchange for an honest review.

Atlantean is a book about Amadeus Angel and his journey to find out his true heritage. His parents are physically and emotionally abusive, but one day that all changes when he is invited to the Seraph mansion and takes his place at Eden Prep. From there, more mysteries pile up and he meets several fascinating girls who have strange powers that he cannot explain.

There is a lot of material here, and a lot of it is interesting. The backstory of Amadeus Angel's true heritage is vast and imaginative. I loved the character Nyssa and was glad to see that she was given more of a role as I got further in the book. *MINOR SPOILER* We quickly discover that Amadeus is more than just human and that the Bible gives us a framework for what really happened in the past. I was impressed by how Watkins explains a lot of the people and events in the Bible in the world that is created. It will be interesting to see the reception of this novel; because it deals with rewriting the Bible in fantastical ways, I am sure people will find ways to ban it.

However, that was not my issue with this book. My biggest issue was that while very creative and imaginative, it read like more of a history book that I had to study for school. The backstory was very dense and I had to reread passages to make sure I kept everything straight. I understand the necessity of explaining the history and background of the mythology of the overall book, but this was the entire book. The action could have been condensed to one small chapter. Furthermore, the only interesting character to me was Nyssa. Amadeus was not a very likeable character, which is unfortunate since the story is told from his point of view. I was ready to feel empathetic to him for his difficult past, but instead he, like most of the other characters, acts like an elite member of society who basically lives for pleasure and indulging himself. *MORE SPOILERS* Amadeus even gets 7 girls to himself. We are told that the reason this is okay is because everyone is "enlightened." But everyone else sticks to just one soulmate and Amadeus is the only one with multiple partners. The other characters in the book especially Eli and his soulmate, Diana, are very know it all, and I started to tire of the amount of times they "scoffed" at what another character did, or how many times the word "smug" was associated with one of them. They really enjoyed knowing more information than Amadeus and the other characters and made it a point to rub it in their and the readers' faces. Also, I felt very unsatisfied by his interactions from his "false parents." I felt like he learned nothing from his experiences and that this part of the story could have been integral to his characters growth. I instead felt like Amadeus pretty much stayed the same throughout the book. He learned about his past, but he didn't really evolve/grow from it; he was excited to know he could be with all the girls he loved and hated his false parents and were glad they were going to die. Finally, the book needs a good editor. Punctuation, mispellings, and mistakes such as "your" for "you're" or "their" for they're" are rampant. It distracts from the rest of the book.

Overall, while many times creative, the mythological back story is dense and the story sinks from the weight. The characters are mostly flat and two dimensional. However, with more work, this story has potential.
