Love Anne George's books. She has a special way of bringing out the character's personalities. Patricia Ann (in her 60's) is 5 feet tall, a former school teacher. Mary Alice, her sister, is six feet tall and 250 pounds, a fashion guru, and is heading toward her 4th marriage. She married older, rich men and they died (really). . Both live in Alabama and you can tell the author loved living there at one time. You really get know the City. Both deal with their now grown families using southern rules. There is "tacky" to "common as pig tracks" when describing someone that breaks these social rules. The story revolves around the Alabama Theatre, which is presenting an Elvis show (32, count them). One is killed but he is not a real Elvis. Can't explain the rest since it involved a number of characters that either get killed or injured or kidnapped. Sounds sordid right? But it actually is quite entertaining and certainly funny.

This was a wonderful book to end the Sister mystery series. The killer was in plain sight and I missed it completely! The many friends made through all of the books are happy. Thank you Ann George for leaving this lovely legacy.
I love Anne George's "Southern Sisters" mystery novels, of which *Elvis* is the last in the series. I just finished revisiting Sister (Mary Alice) and Mouse (Patricia Anne, the narrator of these fine books) by listening to all the unabridged audio books. "Bittersweet" has probably been overused in the reviews of this book, but that's because it's apt.

For the last few days I've been wondering whether Patricia Anne kept Haley's cat Muffin after Haley and Philip returned from Warsaw, what color eyes and hair Patricia Anne's granddaughter Joanna had and how her birth went, how the newlywed Stuckeys fared, and when Fred would finally retire from his metal fabricating business. Among many other things about all the wonderful characters that Anne George brought to us in those books. And I've been so sad because we will not ever know.

So I'm saying a fond "Hey" to my favorite sixty-something Alabama ladies. Sometimes when life gets too stressful, I mentally retreat to Patricia Anne's kitchen where a purring Muffin jumps up on the table, sweet Woofer dog curls up underfoot, the coffee and sweet rolls are always at hand, and we can look through the bay window while good conversation flows.

It's my version of those fugue states that Mouse has, when she's confronted with something horrible and mentally goes shopping at Bed, Bath and Beyond.

How can you not love these folks? How can I not regret that we won't have any more books from Anne George?
The entire series is great. I read all eight books over Christmas break, and I enjoyed every minute of the sassy southern sisters! Granted, I do have a few things in common with Mary Alice and Patricia Ann I'm a woman, I'm from the south (Biloxi, MS), I have a sister, and I'm a teacher. I think this series can be enjoyed by all women though, don't let the fact that they are in their 60's turn you away like it almost did myself. I "lol'd" quite a few times and found myself able to relate to these ladies and I'm only 24. I would like to warn readers of a few things. While I'm not positive when the books were written, I know that 9/11 hadn't happened yet, people were still learning how to use email (especially the older people in these books), cell phone we're not common, Delchamps was still a store, an people still had "car phones" and answering machines. Despite the dated technology, I would recommend these books to anyone looking for a nice break from reality and some fun family drama! )
And if life was truly fair, the wonderful Anne George would still be alive and continuing the saga of the incomparable Patricia Anne and Mary Alice. Sadly, Ms. George passed away in 2001, shortly before this 8th installment in the beloved Southern Sisters series was released.

This entry has the thrice married Mary Alice (Sister) agreeing to take one more stroll down the aisle. Her soon-to-be 4th husband, Sheriff Virgil Stuckey, happens to have a couple of Elvis impersonators in his family tree. While watching the imitation Elvis's (or is it "Elvi"?) perform, Mary Alice and Patricia Anne witness a murder. When Patricia Anne gets unceremoniously hauled in by the police for questioning, the duo get down to business and set out to find the real killer.

Once again, Ms. George gets all the "cozy" details just right. The setting and domestic details draw you right in and the various subplots involving the sisters' children are nicely woven into the storyline. The dialogue is pitch perfect and the humor is good-natured and relatable. The mystery? Well...sure, it's weak but is that really why you read a "cozy" in the first place? If you love endearing characters, lively dialogue and a fun setting then this series is for you. I'd recommend reading these in order, but if you choose not to then I'd still suggest that you start with the first book, "Murder on a Girl's Night Out", which lays the foundation for the rest of the books.

Thanks Anne - I've spent many happy hours in the company of your delightful characters and have yet to meet any reader who hasn't absolutely adored your work.

I enjoy the Southern Sisters series. May not be the greatest writing but the characters are fun, the plot is enticing and I'm left feeling happy. I was sorry when the author died and re-read the stories every couple of years when I need a lift. I now have the audible versions as well. Of course, some of the appeal is personal I'm a small Patricia Ann and my gregarious, social sister Mary may be younger but the parallels are there.
I've loved the whole series. I wish it would go on and on. This series is the book equivalent of comfort food. Well written,so entertaining. Has given me many hours of joy and laughter. I own all the others in both the ,and Audible editions. This is the only one that isn't at Audible,hopefully will soon will be.
