Beth had no idea that shifters even existed and that she wasn’t human until the day she received a text from her dad. A father who had taken off on her when she was just a baby and she knew nothing about. Now strangers are in her school and will rest at nothing to get their hands on Beth but she’s not the only one with a secret. Fleeing from school with her best friend she doesn’t think they want to hurt so they venture out to a local club. It’s at the club that Beth is grabbed by the same people who had been hunting for her at school.

Taken to the top of the neighboring building she learns that they plan to kill her after finding out she was a shifter that even she didn’t know she was. Just before she is thrown over the edge her bloody hand touches the gargoyle statue which comes to life catching her as she falls. He whisks her away to a safe place explaining a little more about who she is. Against his better judgement they return to save her friend and mother but it proves to late to get her mother. Knowing this is all her dad’s fault they set off to find him. Will they make it? Will they find him?

I like Beth a lot she’s a good person with a good heart who is willing to risk herself for her friends which I think is a important quality. I find it unique that she is a octopus and fox shifter who happens to not know what her totem is just yet. I think her best friend Jacqueline is amazing a chameleon raccoon shifter it just works so well. Amar is this broody strong ancient shifter who just happens to have more than a desire to save Beth. I see a little romance between Beth and Amar just starting to bloom.

I’ve had my eye on Shadow Bloodlines for a while but haven’t gotten around to it just yet. I decided to pick it up on a spur of the moment and found it hard to put down. While the concept is all about shifters this isn’t your typical shifter story. First off they don’t have one animal but multiple based on parents plus they hail from a long line of shifters like foxes, chameleon, raccoon, birds and hawks just to name a few. While they can’t shift into the animals like the ancient shifters they do have magical abilities they have inherited from them. Hunted to extinction by those who fear they will come to power. I found the concept intriguing and enjoyed the new twist on the shifter concept. Shadow Bloodlines was a captivating novel that captures the heart as well as the imagination. The characters are easy to connect with you can’t help falling in love with them all. I really enjoyed the author’s writing style and look forward to the next installment.
Shadow Bloodlines is the first book in the young adult series by the same name by author Andrea R. Cooper. This is my first book by Andrea and I have to say, I am impressed with her ability to create an engaging world that felt fresh to me, even though I have read the concept dozens of times in young adult novels. I liked her take on shifters, and I loved that this book features a gargoyle. (I am not going to lie- that was at least 70% of the reason that I picked this book up. It is a creature that fascinates me and I don’t get to read a lot about.) Shadow Bloodlines is a series that I want to continue.

The set up for Shadow Bloodlines in one that I am sure we have all read about before- teenage girl has a secret about her past and her families past concealed from her from birth, and once she finds out about it, she is set off on a whirlwind adventure. But don’t let that deter you, if done right, this is a trope that I really enjoy. And Shadow Bloodlines is done right. I was immediately sucked into Beth and Amar’s story. Beth comes from a shifter family, but unlike other books I have read- her shifter father is no where in the picture. Normally when the parents are hiding a secret from their kid, they go out of their way to be overly protective all the time- not completely absent from their lives. It was an interesting twist on the story. The biggest twist of all comes from the way the shifters are depicted. In the Shadow Bloodlines universe, present day shifters can no longer actually shift into their chosen animal. That power has eroded over time, but instead they are left with abilities, traits and powers unique to their shifter animal. That was a very cool take on the shifter idea for me.

As for the other aspects of Shadow Bloodlines, like the characters, pacing, and plot development, I was equally impressed. There are no over the top perfect characters- both Beth and Amar felt like real people- flaws and all. The plot held my attention all the way through and I am very excited to see what is going to come next. Amar was exactly the way I like my gargoyles too- stoic and protective. I do want some more romance in the second book though. (I don’t see that as being a problem though! 😉 )

Bottom line If you like paranormal books that have all the elements of a classic paranormal that you love, with new and interesting twists thrown in, the Shadow Bloodlines series is a great one for you. It has romance, adventure, mystery, and some seriously awesome bad guys. (I didn’t even talk about the bad guys because I think they are only going to get cooler in the second book, and I figured I talk about them in my next review.) I need book 2 in my life right now.

Beth is just an 18 year old girl trying to decide where to go to college, so she thought. One day, some people showed up hunting her and tried to kill her leading to finding out she was a shifter and taking a trip to find her father. Shadow Bloodlines is not your average shifter story and is filled with action. I can't wait for the next one.
